Founded in Gigondas in 1874, Domaine Santa Duc is today considered one of the reference points not just for Gigondas but for all the southern Rhone. It is today in the capable hands of Yves Gras, the fourth generation of winemakers at the property, who took over from his father in 1985. He is considered one of the great characters of the region and is renowned for producing wines which are powerful evocations of the local terroir. The domaine has 33 acres in Gigondas and 25 acres in several of the Rhone villages. The wines of Yves Gras always demonstrate an immediately recognizable expression of the garrigue combined with a distinctive minerality from the sun-baked rocky soil. The grapes are farmed organically and harvested by hand, followed by a long maceration for several weeks and aging 18 months in casks. The grapes for “Les Quatre Terres” are from a collection of plots in the communes of Vacqueyras, Rasteau, Roaix, and Seguret; Grenache dominates the blend (70%), with small amounts of Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, and even some Clairette added in. This is a good, honest Cotes du Rhone with aromas and flavors of wild strawberries, plums, leather, and black pepper.
