Located in the village of Rochefort-sur-Loire, just south of the town of Savennieres, Domaine des Baumard was founded by the Baumard family in 1634. It is today run by Florent Baumard, widely considered to be a brilliant winemaker, who has made this estate a reference point for Savennieres and the sweet wines of Coteaux du Layon. Baumard farms almost entirely organically and eschews the use of oak; his wines are described as a study in purity and nuance, and he unqualifiedly deserves his reputation as the best winemaker in the Savennieres appellation. Made from Chenin Blanc grown on schist-rich soil, this Savennieres is deeply mineral, ripe, and complex, with stone fruit, spice, and honey notes.
