Domaine Les Aphillanthes is a 92-acre estate with vineyards around three towns, Travaillan, Cairanne, and Sérignan; it is the property of Daniel Boulle, the fourth generation in this family of winemakers, and his wife Hélène. Daniel took over the estate in 1987, selling the grapes he produced to the local co-op; with the encouragement of family and friends he began to make his own wine in 1999 and built a winery the following year. Were friends and family right? Listen to the words of Peter Weygandt, the Domaine’s U. S. importer: “Finding this secluded chais (and the glorious wines inside) is one of the great discoveries of my career as an importer. As Robert Parker stated in Issue 131 of The Wine Advocate, the wines of Daniel Boulle "may be the richest Côtes du Rhône I have tasted." Certainly for me they are.” Boulle focuses intently on the quality of his fruit and considers himself more of a viticulturist than a winemaker; to again quote Peter Weygandt, “What makes Daniel Boulle so special, in my opinion, is his absolute perfection in growing. His yields are minute and the fruit is perfect.” In most vintages Boulle makes three, sometimes four, different blends. For a description of the “3 Cepages” blend, and an explanation of what makes it so special, we again turn to importer Weygandt: “Cuvée 3 Cepages [is a blend of] equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre where all the grapes are harvested at the same time, in October, the time for harvesting Mourvèdre. This made the Grenache and Syrah super ripe, and the blend is nearly 15% natural. In discussing it with Daniel Boulle it is clear that this cuvée is very dear to him, being the most difficult to achieve.”
