Randy Dunn started his wine career as enologist at Caymus; with his wife Lori, he founded Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain in 1979. This was a family business from the start, and remains so to this day, with daughters Kara and Kristina involved and son Mike managing the operation, now joined by his son Alex. The Dunns farm about 42 acres, all planted to Cabernet. Their signature wine, the Howell Mountain Cabernet, is made entirely from estate-grown fruit, but this Napa bottling blends that estate fruit with a small amount of bought-in valley floor fruit, which gives the wine a softer tannic structure, making it more approachable at an earlier date. All of Dunn’s bottlings are aged 32 months in new French oak. Dark and savory, with great character and depth, the wine seduces with aromas and flavors of black cherry, lavender, chocolate, sage, and mint.
