The Erbhof Unterganzner is located above the Isarco River near the town of Bolzano in the predominantly German-speaking region of Trentino-Alto Adige in the north of Italy. It was acquired by Simon Mayr in 1629 and has remained in the Mayr family for more than ten generations, today being in the hands of Josephus and Barbara Mayr. Vintners in this region tend to focus on local varieties such as Schiava, Kerner, and Lagrein, and the Mayrs are no exception: their Sudtiroler St. Magdalener is a 90/10 blend of Schiava and Lagrein done in stainless steel, with the grapes left on their skins for a week of fermentation. With aromas of wildflowers and red currants, this is a light but texturally balanced re with a palate of fresh berries and earthy tones.
