Located in the eastern Loire, just south of Blois, the little-known appellations of Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny are a must for any fan of Loire wines, and the wines produced here by Francois Cazin are widely regarded as a benchmark for the region. Cazin hand-harvests his old vines at yields that are well below the average in any given year. His wines are fresh and floral, sleek and precise. This Cour-Cheverny is made entirely from the ancient local grape variety Romarantin. This varietal, with its high acidity and minerality, can be angular and rough. But in the right hands, as here, it achieves high ripeness and the wine has astonishing grapey, apricot and roasted nuts flavors, kept fresh and lively by good acidity.
