The Crochet family of Sancerre has several branches: there is Lucien Crochet, there is JM (for Jean-Marc) Crochet, there is Daniel Crochet, Dominique & Janine Crochet, and yes, Francois Crochet, by no means the least of them. Working with his wife Carine, Francois Crochet has been running this 30-acre estate since 1998. His vineyards are linmore than thirty separate parcels located in seven different villages and the vines are, on average, thirty years old. This is a very small, “hands-on” operation, with François personally overseeing and also undertaking much of the work in the vineyard (no mean feat with such a parcellated domaine). Known as something of an innovator, Francois produces his own distinctive style of Sancerre, all made in relatively limited, hand-crafted quantities. “Le Petit Chemarin,” from a vineyard planted in 1976, stands out among his wines for its polish and delicacy, its fine mineral textures, and its sleek profile.
