Villard entered the wine world through the kitchen; he started as a chef, eventually migrating to the front of the house and landing in the sommelier spot. With no proper training in winemaking, he was fortunate to be able to draw on the knowledge and experience of his good friends Yves Cuilleron and Pierre Gaillard, although he did eventually obtain a “Professional Agricultural Certificate” with a focus on viticulture and oenology from the School de Davayé. Villard planted his first vines in Condrieu in 1989 and bottled his first win three years later. He now farms 100 acres of vines spread across the area trom as far north as Côte-Rôtie to as far south as Saint-Péray. He is consistently prasised for the sense of grace he brings to both his reds and his whites. His Saint Peray isa 70/30 blend of Marsanne and Roussanne; it is highly aromatic, ripe, rich, and generous, with good intensity on a juicy finish.
