Gabernik 23 is a small family-owned winery in Štajerska, Slovenia. Janko Bogatic has been at the helm here for nearly 30 years, having had to take over the vineyards when he was 18 and his father passed away suddenly. Today Janko farms some 23 acres of vineyards on the slopes around Ritoznoj in the foothills of the Pohorje range. While some of the grapes are sold to another local winemaker, Janko began bottling his own wines under the Gabernik 23 label in 2018. Winemaker Nicholas Gee specializes in something that is a serious local tradition, the “pikola” (or piquette), a low-alcohol wine that is seen as the perfect summer or post-harvest drink. This red version is effectively a by-product of making the winery’s red blend, which currently uses Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, and Riesling. Nick added some water to the pressed grape skins, let it referment, then added half of that to unfermented juice which continued to ferment after being bottled. The result is a fresh, charming, lightly sparkling wine that comes in at a modest 7% alcohol . . . indeed, the perfect summer drink.
