The Gilbert family has been in Australia since 1839, and making wine there since 1847. In 2094 the father-son team of Simon and Will Gilbert, the fifth and sixth generation, decided to go commercial, producing wines from their own vineyards in Mudgee, just west of the Hunter Valley, and from high-elevation vineyard sites in and around Orange, the viticultural region just to the southwest of Mudgee. Grapes for this “Blanc,” a blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer, are sourced from vineyards in the foothills of Mt. Canobolas, an extinct volcano that is, at nearly 4,600 feet, the highest mountain in the region. With delicate aromas of citrus blossom, pear, and rosewater, this is a light, dry, elegant, and thoroughly food-friendly white.
