The Gramona family traces their history as grape growers and winemakers back to 1850 when Josep Batlle managed the vineyard of La Plana for a local family. By the time Josep’s granddaughter married Bartolome Gramona, there was a thriving sparkling wine business, with the debut of Gramona Cava in 1921. Two more generations later, Jaume and Xavier Gramona manage a dynamic operation in the Alt Penedes region, some 178 acres that are farmed biodynamically plus an additional 750 acres that are farmed organically, the vines being 35-75 years in age. And Gramons now produces several still wines as well as their range of sparkling. “Gessami” is an aromatic white made from a mix of “northern” varieties (Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer) and indigenous ones (Muscat Frontignan and Muscat de Alexandria); floral and alluring, it is the quitessential summer white.
