This estate lies at the very southern tip of Portugal’s Setubal peninsula, a little more than a hundred miles south of Lisbon and about six miles from the Atlantic Ocean. It was founded by Luís Mota Capitão’s great-great-grandfather Caio de Loureiro 150 years ago. Isabel, Luis’ mother worked on the family estate, the 4th generation winemaker, for twenty years. She continues to work alongside Luís, but he is now in charge and has been, at age 32, for more than ten years. The estate produces several different cuvees, among them the Vale das Eguas wines. The red is a blend of Touiga Nacional, Alicante Bosche and Merlot, fermented in clay vessels and matured in stainless steel; remarkably smooth and balanced, it features plenty of spice and ripe dark fruit.
