Herdade do Rocim is an ambitious new estate in the southern Alentejo region, founded in 2000 with the intent of focusing primarily on native varietals; but the estate also is working successfully with a number of international varietals including Cabernet and Syrah. Under the direction of Catarina Vieira and her partner, Pedro Ribeiro, the winery is leading the region in regenerating vineyards with organic farming while also taking it back to winemaking techniques that come out of ancient history . . . like making and ageng wines in clay jars (amphoras). This white, done in the traditional Portuguese clay potsknown as Tahla, is a blend of four indigenous grapes; elegant and well balanced, it has subtle notes of citrus and white peach with intense acidity and a complex finish.
