Herdade do Rocim is an ambitious new estate in the southern Alentejo region, founded in 2000 with the intent of focusing primarily on native varietals; but the estate also is working successfully with a number of international varietals including Cabernet and Syrah. The Rocim estate was purchased in 2000 by Movicortes group, which is a Portuguese company that specializes in agricultural machinery, but has its roots in farming and vineyards. Catarina Vieira, daughter of the late Jose Ribeiro Vieira, the founder of the Movicortes group, has been coordinating the development of the estate. For this bottling, however, Rocim has left the Alentejo, heading instead to the Douro up north. Raio de Luz is a field blend of grapes from three different old vineyards in the Douro. Fermented in granite lagar and aged 16 months in French oak, it is nonetheless lighter-styled and fresh, made to drink relatively young, with ripe fruit backed by stony minerality.
