Hermann J. Wiemer is rightly regarded as one of the pioneers of viticulture and winemaking in the Finger Lakes; today the winery Hermann founded more than thirty years ago is co-owned and run by Hermann's long-term winemaker Fred Merwarth, who worked as an apprentice under Hermann for eight years, and Swedish agronomist Oskar Bynke. Early on the winery established itself as one of the preeminent wineries of the Finger Lakes, with a special reputation for producing world-class Riesling. In 2015 the team began conversion to biodynamic farming; that conversion is now nearly complete, and they are now awaiting Demeter certification for their HJW vineyard. The “HJW Vineyard” (this being the original vineyard, planted in 1977) bottling is a limited release each year. This is a classic dry Riesling with racy acidity underpinned by a dense mineral backbone.
