The story of Chateau Franc-Mayne has its beginnings in the 17th century, but its modern history features a string of several owners: the large insurance company, AXA Millesimes (1984-1996); Belgian entrepreneur Georgy Fourcroy (1996-2004); the Laviale family, who also own Vieux Maillet and Chateau de Lussac (2004-2018); and it is now owned by Jean-Pierre Savare, who had been a minority investor during the Laviale ownership. “Ilex” is a second label, made from the estate’s younger vines. The estate is currently planted to roughly 80/20 balance of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with the state intention to slowly increase the Cab Franc plantings over the coming years. This “Ilex,” however, is 100% Merlot, from vines averaging 20 years of age and made for earlier drinking. It shows fresh red fruits and spices on the nose and is generous on the palate, with a well-balanced tannic structure.
