Jolie-Laide is a two-person operation based in Sebastopol, California, the two being Scott Schultz and his partner Jenny Schultz. Scott is a refugee from the restaurant scene in Chicago who went to California originally to lead the wine program at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon. Scott chooses to work with some of California's rarer varieties, and his quantities are often small (his total annual output today is only some 2400 cases). In this case, however, Scott is dealing with a blend of fairly standard grapes, the classic Rhone trio of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, sourced from two different vineyards, one in Sonoma County and the other in the Yorkville Highlands. Clearly inspired by the reds of the Rhone, this is a vibrant and concentrated red described by one reviewer as “an American Chateauneuf-du-Pape.”
