In 1636 German diplomat Nicolau Kopkë travelled with his son, Cristiano, from Hamburg to Portugal, representing the Hanseatic League. Two years later, he founded Nicolau Kopkë & Co., a shipping company which would eventually become universally recognized as the first Port House in the industry’s history. Today it is owned by the Sogevinus Group, who also own Burmester, Barros, and Calem. The house is known especially for their seemingly unlimited stocks of aged tawnies and white ports released in small quantities. This is, however, a standard non-vintage tawny but an excellent example of the category. It is smooth and round on the palate, full of rich and enveloping flavors, the ideal accompaniment for any dessert that includes caramel, coffee, apricot, and/or dried fruit.
