Located in the rolling hills of Umbria, La Carraia was founded in 1988 by expert viticulturist Odoardo Gialetti and world-renowned enologist Riccardo Cotarella. Edoarado Gialetti, along with his sons Mauro and Marco, owns nearly 500 acres of some of the oldest terroir in Orvieto. La Carraia comprises five estates, all located within the heart of the Orvieto region and all focused on the creation of modern wines that maintain the terrior of the Umbrian hills. Today, you can still find Cotarella in the cellar, and Gialetti in the vineyards. The vineyards are in the southern portion of Orvieto, and enjoy a distinct microclimate as a result of a hydroelectric lake that was build in the late 1970s by the Italian Government. The lake helps keep temperatures down on hot summer nights, allowing the grapes to maintain their all-important acidity. This Orvieto Classico, a blend of Procanico and Grechetto done entirely in stainless steel, is marked by bright citrus notes and a persistent minerality.
