La Raia is located in the southern reaches of Piedmont . . . so far south that the white wine produced there is a Gavi, made from the Cortese grape and generally associated with Liguria. La Raia is a fully functioning farm, owned since 2003 by Giorgio Rossi Cairo and run today by Giorgio’s son Piero. The farm comprises some 450 acres, with nearly 125 acres planted to vines and the remainder kept in pastures and woodlands. All the vineyards are farmed biodynamically ad have been Demeter-certified since 2007. The winery produces two whites, both Gavis, and this Barbera, which represents only 10% of their plantings. Fone entirely in stainless steel and bottled the summer following harvest, this is a bright, snappy version of Barbera, with vibrant acidity and chalky overtones.
