With the onset of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Matilde Lamadrid chose to send her eleven-year-old son to the United States. Eventually the son, Guillermo Garcia Lamadrid, reunited with his family in Puerto Rico, but those early years must have left him with a taste for adventure because, even though he was already in his middle years, when the vineyards of Argentina called in 2004 he made the move without a second thought. He quickly established himself in a position of leadership in the Agrelo region of Lujan de Cuyo. Today Bodega Lamadrid comprises three estates totaling 2248 acres, the vineyards planted to a mix of Malbec, Bonarda, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and the enterprise remains in the Garcia Lamadrid family, with Guillermo’s daughter Gabriela playing an active role. This single-vineyard Cab from the Agrelo region is a lush and opulent version of the grape, medium-bodied, with gentle tannins and moderate acidity backing ripe fruit flavors.
