Les Vignerons D’ Estézargues is a co-operative cellar in the small town of Estézargues, near Avignon. As a co-op it is unique in the wine world, in that the growers in this group vinify their wine separately and make single cuvees from their best plots. They also follow natural winemaking practices and are possibly one of the only co-ops in the world to do so. They are known locally as “the sorcerers of the southern Rhone.” Domaine La Monagnette is owned by Jean-Marie Granier, known as the Gentleman Farmer of Estézargues. He bought his first plots when he was 16, became the city’s mayor at 24, and the vice-president of the co-op back in 1990. Following the path of his father, who farmed about 75 acres of vineyards, Jean-Marie increased the vineyard to its current size of 150 acres and his son, Jean-Laurent, has been caring for 17 acres since 2003. A classic blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, this is a smooth, round Cotes-du-Rhone with black ripen fruits, black pepper aromas, and lovely tannins.
