The Ruspolis are an old aristocratic family that has been a presence in Tuscany since the Renaissance. It was Princess Elena Ruspoli Berlingieri who began production of Chianti Classico at Tenuta Lilliano in 1958. The label bears the coat of arms of both the Ruspoli and Berligieri families. Today the estate is co-owned by brothers Giulio and Pietro Ruspoli and has been managed since 1989 by Giulio Ruspoli. There are 100 acres, planted largely to Sangiovese but also with a small amount of international and indigenous varieties. Gran Selezione, the newest category of Chianti Classico, requires the wine be made from estate-grown grapes, aged for thirty months (three of which must be in bottle), then judged and approved by a panel of Consorzio members. Lilliano’s version is sourced from the winery’s two finest vineyards, Le Piagge and La Casina; it is rich yet silky and soft, with notes of cherries, red currants, brambles, dried herbs, cloves, earth and spices on the long, lingering finish.
