Joana Macanita is the sister of Portugal’s wine wunderkind, Antonio Macanita, but while she may have gotten the first push into the wine world from him, her accomplishments and success are all her own. In any given year she produces, on average, sixty different wines, and while her hoe base is her winery in the Douro Valley, she works with special vineyards all over the country as a consulting winemaker. No matter how far-flung these projects may be, Joana’s core winemaking approach is marked by her unique combination of applied science plus an unwavering devotion to local culture and terroir. Her “Mac” Tinto is a 50/25/25 blend of Touriga Nacional, Sousao, and Tinto Roriz sourced from old vines grown in high-altitude vineyards in all three subzones of the Douro Valley; it is balanced and elegant, a transparent expression of the Douro terroir.
