Lessona is a tiny appellation (less than 60 acres in all) in the northern reaches of Piedmont. The Clerico family has been cultivating vines here since the 1700s, and the Clerico estate, under the direction of Massimo’s father, was one of the three original vineyards awarded the right to the Lessona appellation when it was first created in 1976. The Clerico family owns five acres within the designated Lessona zone, which makes the Clerico azienda the third largest landholder in the appellation. Massimo’s “Ca du Leria,” from a vineyard site immediately adjacent to the family home, is a blend of Nebbiolo, Croatina, and Vespolina; it is a wine of intense minerality, with a fresh, lively presence on the palate. Approximately 1500 bottles produced annually.
