After having worked several vintages abroad and then worked several years as chief winemaker at two of Argentina’s top wineries, Fabre Montmayou and Bodega Norton, Matias Riccitelli set up on his own in 2009, establishing his winery in Lujan de Cuyo. Matias was born into winemaking, his father being the legendary winemaker Jorge Riccitelli, head winemaker at Norton for more than twenty years, hence the label “The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far from the Tree.” Matias grows eight different varietals at two different locations in Mendoza and in the Rio Negro region of Patagonia as well. His Malbec is a fresh expression of Argentina’s flagship varietal, done in a combination of small concrete tanks and used French oak barrels, with partial whole-cluster fermentation. The wine is fresh and bright, with juicy black fruits, notes of black pepper and violets, and a soft, rich finish.
