One of California’s first woman winemakers, Merry Edwards began her career at Mount Eden Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1974. She went on to become the founding winemaker at Matanzas Creek in 1977 and remained there until 1984. In 1997, family and friends joined Merry to found Merry Edwards Winery, with a focus on producing wines with a sense of place from the Russian River Valley. Her Sauvignon Blanc is unusual on two counts, the first being that she bolsters the wine with the inclusion of some Sauvignon Musqué and the second that she ages the wine in oak to build a rich, creamy texture. The wine is supple and elegant, with layers of mango, melon, and peach flavors, and there are hints of minerality and lively acidity throughout.
