Located in the northern reaches of Lebanon’s high-altitude Bekaa Valley, the Mersel Winery was founded in 2000 by Lebanese-Australian winemaker Eddie Chami; named for one of three sub-regions of the valley, the winery focuses largely on grape varieties that are indigenous to the country. The aim here is to keep everything simple: the wines are made naturally, with little or no added sulfites, and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. This is an orange (skin-contact) wine (in this case, 21 days of contact), made with one of those indigenous grapes, Merwah. The wine fermented in a combination of stainless steel tanks and amphorae and was aged on the lees for two years. This is a rich wine, with nutty, floral, and citrus notes, light and crisp, with a persistent acidity that enhances the flavors.
