Located in North Canterbury, on New Zealand’s South Island, the Mt. Beautiful dates from the early years of this century, with the vineyards having been planted in 2003-2005 and the first wine made in tiny quantities in 2007. Today Mt. Beautiful comprises 192 acres, at an elevation of nearly 1400 feet, planted mostly to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, with some Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Riesling. Founder David Teece has been described as “the Quintessential Kiwi,” but in fact he now makes his home in Berkeley where, as one of the world’s preeminent scholars in business and economics, he is the Tusher Professor of Global Business and Economics at UC Berkeley and Director of the Tusher Center for Intellectual Capital. Their Sauvignon Blanc offers a refreshing change from the typical Kiwi profile, toning down the grassy notes in favor of floral aromatics and tropical fruit flavors.
