The Niepoort name is for all time connected with the Port wine trade. Today the company that began in 1842 is run by Dirk Niepoort, who is arguably one of the most influential forces on the Portuguese wine scene today. In addition to running the family port business, Niepoort has, in recent years, become increasingly involved in making dry table wines. In 2012 the Niepoort family entered into a partnership with winemaker Sergio Silva, who had parted ways with his original partner in the Lagar de Biaxo winery, which made it possible for Silva to convert entirely to biodynamics. This is Silva’s red Bairrada, 100% Baga, fresh and vibrant yet spicy and earthy, with lively red fruit and silky tannins.
