This historic estate in Castenuovo Berardenga was, up through the 1960s and 1970s, one of the most highly regarded wineries in the region. By the ‘80s, however, it was sorely in need of investment, particularly in the vineyards. The Poggiali family, owners of nearby Felsina, came to the rescue, buying the property in 1995. For several years the Poggialis used the Pagliarese estate primarily as a source of grapes, but with the 2015 vintage they gave Pagliarese back its own identity, right down to returning to the inclusion of small amounts of Canaiolo and Mammolo, a technique that had typified the house style in the past. The result is a smooth, pure expression of Chianti, elegant, with floral and spicy undertones.
