When Mario Pala took over the family vineyards and winery in 1950, the emphasis was on producing bulk wine for other wineries. Over the years the focus has come to be on quality rather than quantity and the winery is now considered to be one of Sardinia’s top producers. Mario is now joined by the fourth generation of the family, Massimiliano, Elisabetta, and Mariantonietta. In 2024, however, the estate turned an important page, when it was acquired by Lia Tolaini-Banville, owner of the Tolaini estate in Chianti and founder of the US importer Banville Wine Estates. Lia’s focus at Pala is on elevating quality and expanding the winery’s reputation globally. Nuragus is the oldest varietal in Sardinia, probably arriving with the Phoenicians around 2500 B.C. It is rarely grown today, but the Palas consider it the local grape variety par excellence. Fresh and dry on the palate, the wine has a slightly fruity aroma, good intensity, and brisk acidity.
