Palmina is the project of Steve Clifton, half of the famed winemaking duo of Brewer-Clifton. Palmina focuses exclusively on Italian grape varieties and is meant to be a California expression of the Italian spirit and lifestyle. Palmina is named in honor of Steve’s great friend Paula, who taught him to love cooking, wine and the Italian lifestyle and who was a spark in Steve’s life. After Paula succumbed to breast cancer, Steve found that the given name on her Italian birth certificate was Palmina, and the winery was thus fittingly named. Nebbiolo can be a difficult grape to handle, but it proves a good fit with Santa Barbara County as the climate and topography are quite similar to its native Piedmont. Clifton believes Nebbiolo needs some time in bottle for its various elements to integrate, and so this 2008 was released only in 2013. It is smooth and almost creamy on the palate, with a seamless mixture of acidity, tannin and structure that brings fresh fruit notes of raspberry and sour cherry, the mid-palate is firm and the finish elegant.
