Podere Sapaio was founded in 1999 after Massimo Piccin, originally from the Veneto, convinced his father to invest in land and the creation of a wine estate in Bolgheri. Starting virtually from scratch, the Piccins have built a state-of-the-art winery and developed 100 acres of prime vineyard land. Experimentation and innovation are key words at Sapaio: grapevines from Bordeaux have been cultivated here for the past fifty years, but the Piccins are interested in producing new expressions of these varietals in the Bolgheri region, wines of power, elegance and longevity. At the moment they produce only two wines, both Bordeaux-type blends, one called Sapaio and this Volpolo. Volpolo is a 70/15/15 blend of Cabernet, Merlot, and Petit Verdot; this is an austere, muscular red, concentrated and focused, made in a modern harmonious style, with a long aftertaste of fruit and spice.
