Antonia Adelaide Ferreira is, in many respects, Portugal’s version of Madame Cliquot. Like Cliquot, Ferreira was widowed at an early age (33) and both had remarkably astute business instincts and built successful wine enterprises, one in Champagne, the other in Port wine. Antonia in fact became the largest landowner in the Douro and had one of the largest fortunes in the country in her lifetime. The historic Quinta de Porrais, originally the property of Dona Antonia, remains in the Ferreira family and in 2011 they chose to form a partnership with Casa Santos Lima, a highly successful multi-generation family wine enterprise, to produce wine under the Quinta do Porrais name. Their white, a blend of two grapes native to the Douro, Rabigato and Codega do Larinho, is bright and lively, with good fruit intensity, lively acidity, and a refreshing finish.
