The Coeur Wine Company, a Manhattan-based importer/distributor, was founded in 2013 by Eric Clemons, with a focus from the start on producers making honest, authentic wines. Scopa represents something new for Clemons, and for Coeur: it is proprietary label of Italian wines made through collaborations between Coeur and some of their favorite Italian wineries. As they describe it, “the goal here is simple: create an affordable, everyday wine at a great price.” Their white offering from Sicily is a 70/30 blend of two native Sicilian varietals, Catarratto and Grillo. The Catarratto spends 36 hours fermenting on the skins while the Grillo is direct-pressed, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Done entirely in stainless steel, the wine is medium-bodied and dry, with notes of apricot, almond, green apple and anise.
