The Coeur Wine Company, a Manhattan-based importer/distributor, was founded in 2013 by Eric Clemons, with a focus from the start on producers making honest, authentic wines. Scopa represents something new for Clemons, and for Coeur: it is proprietary label of Italian wines made through collaborations between Coeur and some of their favorite Italian wineries. As they describe it, “the goal here is simple: create an affordable, everyday wine at a great price.” Their offering from Sicily is a blend of Nero d’Avola, Nerello Mascalese, and Perricone from organically-farmed vineyards in Partinico, outside of Palermo; fermented in stainless steel and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it is light to medium in weight, with earthy notes of cherry and black raspberry, a whisper of smoke, and zippy acidity on the finish.
