South African Hans Schroder and his wife Midori met as university students in Japan in the 1960s. After marrying they opted to remain in Tokyo because their marriage contravened the apartheid regime’s Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act. Thirty years on, with the end of apartheid in sight, they moved to South Africa, bought a Stellenbosch farm, and started to grow grapes. They were shortly joined by their eldest daughter Mimi and her American husband Jose Conde. Jose was now in a position to pursue his newly discovered passion for wine, and Stark-Conde is the result. Totally self-taught, he started experimenting with winemaking in 2000, and the experiment earned five stars in the country’s top wine guide. That was for a Cabernet, and Cabernet remains the winery’s calling card. This is a wine of unusual depth, with concentrated dark fruit flavors framed by polished tannins and accented by cedar and herb notes.
