Terre Brulee is the creation of a dynamic young couple, Vincent and Tania Careme, who set up shop in 2013 in the Swartland region of South Africa. Tania is a native of South Africa, but Vincent’s home ground is Domaine Vincent Careme in France’s Loire Valley. Taking advantage of the climate shifts between the two hemispheres, the couple can position themselves in the two wineries at the appropriate times: Tania oversees all aspects of the Loire winery while Vincent is away in South Africa, allowing him the freedom and attention necessary to foster this promising project. For the moment, Terre Brulee makes only a white wine and a red, appropriately named “Le Blanc” (100% Chenin Blanc) and “Le Rouge” (a Syrah/Cinsault blend). The red blend is soft yet spicy, with aromas of plums and blackberries and a complex yet perfect balance of many flavors. Terre Brulee practices sustainable viticulture with a minimal-intervention approach in the cellar, using natural yeasts and avoiding fining or filtering.
