Larry Turley got his start as one of the owners of Frog's Leap Winery in Rutherford. When the hankering to focus on single vineyard Zinfandel in a bone-crushing style took hold of him, he purchased property in Napa Valley just off Highway 29 between Calistoga and St. Helena, acquired contracts for some particularly ''gnarly'' old vineyards, and did just that. The debut Zinfandel vintage, 1993, quickly established that Turley Wine Cellars was deadly serious about making blockbuster Zinfandels from some of California's oldest, pre-prohibition, head-pruned vineyards. Planted in 1944, the Dogtown Vineyard is organically farmed by Turley Wine Cellars, who describe it as having some of the most consistently low yields and best natural acidity of any other they’ve farmed. The winery has been making this single-vineyard Zin for more than 27 years. The wine is supple and rich, with a compelling nose of red fruit and hibiscus and a long generous finish.
