Van Volxem is at the center of Wiltingen, the most celebrated commune of the Saar Valley. Located on the site of a former monastery, the winery has been restored to its former glories by the investment, initiative and flair of owner Roman Niewodniczanski, scion of the Bitburger brewing family, who bought the property in 2000. This “old vines” Riesling is made from vines that are more than 120 years old; most are ungrafted and come from some of the steepest slate slopes in the region. Given the age of the vines, the berries produced are quite tiny, making for a wine of great depth and concentration.
