Google the man’s name and you will quickly come up with a link to a site title “Why you should know Jeff Carrel.” Turns out, the reason is that he is the hottest roving winemaker in the south of France. In past years he has worked in the Loire, Beaujolais, Alsace, and Bordeaux, but today his office is in Narbonne and his production facility is in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse just southwest of Narbonne. The signature line “by Jeff Carrel” on a label is now universally regarded as a promise of good things to come. His Villa des Anges Cabernet is made from grapes grown on a Languedoc estate that has been in the Menard-Durand family since the 18th Century, the vinehards having been completely replanted over the past 25 years. Rasy to drink, this Cab is fresh, intense and concentrated, round and fruity, with notes of licorice and blackberry.
