Vina Echeverria effectively dates from 1979, when Roberto Echeverría Rubio, having earned a Ph.D. in economics at Cornell and spent eight years as an economist with the World Bank in D.C., opted to return to his home in Chile and to continue his family’s tradition in winemaking. Today Viña Echeverría is still a family-owned and managed estate winery, and its vineyards and house occupy the same location as they did nearly 100 years ago. The 165 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards in Chile’s Central Valley are planted, tended and harvested by the next generation of the Echeverría family, Robert, Viviana, Paulina, and Diego (although Roberto Senior s still very active in the business). Wines in their “No Es Pituko” range are vinified naturally, without any additions at any stage (the name is Chilean slang for “it ain’t fancy”). This is their orange wine, made 100% from Sauvignon Blanc that has been wild fermented and left on the skins for 60 days, a process that gives the wine its distinctive orange hue and unique tanninc structure. With vibrant notes of citrus and wild herbs, the wine has bright acidity and a dry refreshing finish.
