The “Lustig” Gruner (the word means “happy” or “fun” in German) is made by the husband-and-wife team of Josef and Pia Wurzinger at their winery in Tadten Seewinkel in Burgenland, near the Hungarian border. Their vineyards, 60-some acres in all across 13 different sites, are planted mostly to Gruner Veltliner and Zweigelt and have all been certified organic since 2014. Done entirely in stainless steel, “Lustig” is crisp and lean, spicy and forward on the nose, with a distinct aroma of grapefruit rind, soft on the palate, with the black pepper notes typical of the varietal, round and well balanced at the finish.
