Else Zuschmann grew up on her family’s farm, in the eastern part of the Weinvertel, about 20 minutes west of Vienna. After studying winemaking she began working on the 42-acre farm in 2000; seven years later, with her husband Peter Schofmann, she made the decision to focus on wine production, their aim being to make elegant, well-structured wines with harmony, balance and the ability to age. Virtually everyone making wine in the Weinvertel makes a “gemichter satz,” a field blend of all the varieties growing in the same vineyard. Sometimes it’s anybody’s guess what those grapes are, but here we’re told they are Traminer, Welschriesling, Fruhroter Veltliner, and Weissburgunder; the blend makes for a white that is zesty, light and bright, yet complex and elegant.
