Barker’s Marque and its companion Waverley Vineyard (which Woolpack Wines is part of) are located in the Marlborough region of New Zealand’s South Island, in the Awatere Valley, just a half mile from the sea. It is the joint project of W. Gillett Johnson, on the business side, and winemaker Simon Barker, who is ably assisted by his viticulurist wife, Vanessa. They currently produce an estate Riesling, along with four different Sauvignon Blancs, one of them being this “Woolpack.” Grapes for all the wines are sourced from the Waverley Vineyard, planted in 2004 and 2005. Barker calls Woolpack “the poster child of hands-off winemaking,” indicating minimal winemaker intervention in the process. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc with a juicy, briny character with dried herbs, spicy apple and lemongrass on the palate and an undercurrent of minerality.
