There can be no more iconic name in the Tuscan wine world than that of Antinori: the family has been involved in the production of wine for more than six centuries spanning twenty-six generations. Today the firm is run by Marchese Piero Antinori with the support of his three daughters, Albiera, Allegra, and Alessia, all directly involved in the work of the house. They are today one of the biggest wine companies in Italy, and their innovations played a large part in the “Super-Tuscan” revolution of the 1970s. Solaia, one of the earliest of those Super-Tuscans, debuted in 1979; originally a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, it is today a blend of those two grapes plus Sangiovese. The wine is big and rich but at the same time fresh and bright; full-bodied, it has chewy tannins and a long finish.
