François Berthenet and his father Jean-Pierre run this domaine in Montagny-les-Buxy, the principal town in the Montagny appellation. Although the Berthenets can trace their history in the region back more than four centuries (during which time grapes were inevitably cultivated), the domaine was created in 1974 when Jean Berthenet purchased his first acres planted with Chardonnay and Aligoté along with another parcel of Pinot Noir. Originally all the Berthenet grapes were sold to the cooperative in Buxy, but in 2001 Jean-Pierre, who had taken over from his father in 1991, decided to leave the cooperative and set out on his own. Today he and son Francois farm 45 acres of vines spread out over a score of parcels throughout the commune. Their Aligote plantings include a full acres of vines planted in 1950, from which this bottling is sourced; done in stainless steel, it has bright citrus notes buttressed by just the right amount of acidity to push the fruit forward.
