This estate was founded in 1930 by Ernesto Grimaldi, who passed the reins to son Giacomo in the mid-1980s. Both Ernest and Giacomo had sold most of their grapes in bulk, leaving a small portion to be bottled and sold under the family name, but Ferrucio, the next generation who took over the 1996, changed all that: he moved the business in a new direction by producing wine exclusively from the family’s vineyards and strategically increasing their holdings from a little more than three acres to some 25 acres, including vineyards in the acclaimed Barolo crus of Le Coste and Sotto Castello di Novello. This Barolo is produced from two vineyards, Terlo in the commune of Barolo and Ravero in the commune of Novello; medium- to full-bodied, it is firm and silky, with lots of power and and richness, beautiful fruit, and polished but racy tannins.
