Stefan Steinmetz represents the fourth generation of this family to make wine here in Brauneberg, in the Mosel. When the business was founded in the early 1900s it was not just a winery but a butcher, an inn, a guest house, and a farm. It was Stefan’s father Günther who established the reputation for quality the winery is known for today, after taking over for his father in 1958, and Stefan followed in his footsteps by taking over as cellar master and vineyard manager in 2000, at the age of only 22. Today Stefan runs the estate in partnership with his wife Sammie. Their 35 acres, spread across 13 different parcels, are planted to a mix of Riesling, Merlot, and four different members of the Pinot family, both red and white, and all are farmed biodynamically. This Riesling, drawn from all 13 of those parcels and a mix of young and old vines, has aromas of citrus and ripe pears , with juicy fruit and an amazing silkiness on the palate, lively acidity, and an elegant finish.
